Wood chips and pellets - the driving force of wood industry exports

In 2023, the wood industry aims to export 17.5 billion USD. In the first months of the year, the wood industry still grew thanks to wood pellets and wood chips.
At the beginning of the year, the biggest export of the wood industry was wood chips, which were exported to the markets of Korea, Japan, etc. to make paper and pellets for use in thermal power plants.
In the past period, the wood industry has made great progress, increased exports, and diversified supply products on the world market. However, currently, the main market of Vietnamese wood for export is the United States, which is witnessing a weaker purchasing power of the people. This short-term trend has made some wooden furniture products, plywood, etc., slow to export at the beginning of the year.
At the beginning of the year, the biggest export of the wood industry was wood chips, which were exported to the markets of Korea, Japan, etc. to make paper and pellets for use in thermal power plants.
At Nghi Son port, Thanh Hoa, activities of importing, loading and unloading wood chips for export continuously take place. At the beginning of this year, wood chips and pellets, two items that contributed about a quarter of the export value of the wood industry last year, are playing a key role in the export of the wood industry.
"Early this year, sawn timber and peeled boards are slowing down. However, wood chips are still being exported, so the woodchip industry is still carrying the output of unsold lumber and peeled boards to switch to wood chips, ensuring the livelihoods of forest growers," said Mr. Pham Van Thanh, Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial Timber and Forest Products Association.

Compared with the previous year, the world price of wood pellets and chips also increased slightly. "Compared to previous years, the value of tablets in 2023 tends to increase by 10-15% compared to previous years," said Mr. Le Duc Thai, CEO of Van Lang Yufukuya Co., Ltd.
